Anxiety Therapy in Charleston, SC

Anxiety does not always look like panic. Sometimes it looks like lying awake at 2 a.m. rehearsing a conversation you already had. Sometimes it looks like turning down an invitation for the fourth time, or a stomachache before every Monday, or a chest that tightens in the checkout line at Harris Teeter for no reason you can name.
Whatever shape it takes for you, it is treatable — and it responds well to therapy. At our West Ashley office on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, licensed therapists work with Charleston adults, teens and children using approaches with strong evidence behind them: cognitive behavioural therapy, exposure work, EMDR and DBT skills. Most clients start within about a week, and we accept most major insurance plans.
Understanding anxiety

When anxiety is more than everyday stress

Stress passes when the thing causing it passes. Anxiety keeps going after the deadline is met, the flight lands, the results come back fine. It is worth talking to someone when you notice a pattern like this:
You do not need to meet a diagnostic threshold to deserve help. If anxiety is shaping your decisions, that is reason enough to make an appointment.
How we help

How we treat anxiety

There is no single anxiety treatment, because there is no single kind of anxiety. Your therapist will match the approach to what is actually happening for you, and will tell you why they are recommending it.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

The most researched treatment for anxiety disorders. You learn to catch the thought patterns that keep anxiety running — catastrophising, mind-reading, the mental rehearsal of worst cases — and to test them against evidence rather than argue with them. Most people notice a shift within eight to twelve sessions.

Exposure-based work

For phobias, social anxiety, panic and OCD-type patterns, avoidance is the fuel. Exposure therapy reduces it gradually and collaboratively — never a trial by fire. You set the pace, and each step is planned with your therapist before you take it.

EMDR

When anxiety is rooted in trauma — an accident, a loss, a deployment, something from childhood — EMDR helps the nervous system finish processing a memory that got stuck. It is particularly effective when the anxiety has a clear before-and-after point.

DBT skills

Practical tools for the moment anxiety spikes: distress tolerance, emotion regulation, grounding. Useful on their own and as a companion to CBT, especially for teens and for anyone whose anxiety arrives fast and physically.

Medication management, if you want it

Some people do well with therapy alone. Others find that medication lowers the volume enough to make therapy work. Our psychiatric providers can assess and prescribe, and they coordinate directly with your therapist — you are not managing two disconnected clinicians who never speak to each other. That is a real advantage of coming to an integrated practice rather than assembling your own care team.

Your first visit

What your first appointment is like

The unknown is its own source of anxiety, so here is exactly what happens.
1

You reach out

Book online or call 843-508-6731. Our care coordination team asks a few questions about what you are dealing with, your schedule and your insurance, and matches you with a therapist who fits — not just whoever has the next open slot.
2

You complete paperwork online

Intake forms are done before you arrive, so your first session is a conversation rather than a clipboard.
3

Your first session

Fifty minutes. Your therapist asks about what brought you in, your history, what you have already tried, and what a good outcome would look like for you. You do not have to tell your whole story on day one.
4

You leave with a plan

By the end of the session you will know the approach your therapist recommends, roughly how long it is likely to take, and what happens next. If it is not the right fit, say so — switching therapists within the practice is normal and we make it seamless.
Evening appointments run until 8 p.m. on weekdays and we are open Saturdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., so therapy does not have to cost you a workday.
Cost & coverage

Cost and insurance

We accept most major insurance plans, including BlueCross BlueShield, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, Optum, UMR, Tricare, Medicare, Medicaid, Molina, Ambetter, SelectHealth and CHAMPVA — more than forty plans in total. For most clients, anxiety therapy is covered as a standard behavioural health benefit and you pay only a copay.
If you are paying out of pocket, self-pay therapy sessions run $125–$160, and psychiatric appointments $125–$350 depending on the visit type. If you are out of network, we provide a superbill you can submit for reimbursement. We also hold a limited number of sliding-scale slots for clients with demonstrated financial need — ask when you call.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about anxiety therapy in Charleston

Most people working on anxiety with CBT see meaningful change in eight to twelve weekly sessions. Anxiety layered on top of trauma, or present for many years, usually takes longer. Your therapist will give you an honest estimate after the first session and revisit it as you go — you will not be left guessing.
Not necessarily. Many people do well with therapy alone. If your anxiety is severe enough to interfere with sleep, work or daily functioning, medication can make therapy more effective, and our psychiatric providers can assess whether it makes sense for you. The decision is always yours, and it can be revisited at any point.
Yes, in almost all cases. Anxiety disorders are covered as standard behavioural health benefits under BlueCross BlueShield, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Cigna, Tricare, Medicare, Medicaid and most other major plans we accept. Call 843-508-6731 and we will verify your specific benefits before your first appointment.
New clients can often be seen within about a week, and sometimes sooner. Availability varies by clinician and by whether you want in-person or virtual. Evening and Saturday appointments are available.
A therapist provides talk therapy — CBT, EMDR, exposure work — and cannot prescribe. A psychiatric provider assesses for medication and manages it. Many people see both, and because we offer both under one practice, they coordinate with each other rather than leaving you to relay messages between them.
Yes. Virtual therapy is available anywhere in South Carolina over secure video and is covered by the same insurance plans. It is just as effective as in-person care for most anxiety presentations, and for social anxiety or agoraphobia it is often the better place to start.
Yes, from age three. Younger children are seen with play-based and age-appropriate approaches with parents actively involved; teens are seen individually with family sessions as needed. School anxiety and school refusal are among the most common reasons families come to us.

You don't have to keep managing this on your own

Anxiety tells you to wait — until things calm down, until you are less busy, until it gets bad enough to count. It never gets less persuasive on its own. Making one call is usually the hardest part, and it is over in five minutes.
Call 843-508-6731 or book online. We will match you with a Charleston therapist who works with anxiety, verify your insurance, and in most cases get you in within a week.
